The FAQ Level 4 Diploma in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving Instruction (RQF) or DERADI® is intended to empower trainee driving instructors with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively instruct, mentor, and assess learners in both routine and emergency response ambulance driving. The curriculum incorporates principles of driving legislation, regulation, standards, and agreed ways of working to ensure a safe and competent driver in line with the High Speed Driver Training Competencies.

The program also delves into human factors affecting risk perception in budding emergency response ambulance drivers. It covers three main areas: the Ambulance Driver Risk Index (ADR), the Goals for Driver Education (GDE) framework, and the Driving Instructor Ambulance Driver Risk Index, all intended to track and enhance progression and development.

The DERADI® is designed specifically to prepare driving instructors to deliver the FAQ Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving, with its learning outcomes and assessment criteria at the heart of the course.

Component 1

Routine ambulance demonstration driving

Component 1aims to equip trainee instructors with the necessary knowledge, understanding, and skills to instruct learners in routine ambulance demonstration driving, adhering to the High Speed Driver Training Competencies.

Component Details

  • Conducting pre-shift vehicle daily inspections and pre-driving checks, understanding legal requirements, and addressing vehicle defects.
  • Complying with current driving laws and regulations, understanding potential exemptions, and managing incidents.
  • Using vehicle braking systems, including conducting static and mobile brake tests, and applying tapered braking.
  • Utilising vehicle steering systems effectively.
  • Safely negotiating corners and bends, understanding the concept of ‘limit point’.
  • Using vehicle transmission systems during routine driving, including gear selection for economical driving.
  • Varying vehicle speed using acceleration sense and engine braking.
  • Applying procedures for multi-lane carriageways and motorway driving, including understanding road signs and procedures for breakdowns.
  • Safely reversing and manoeuvring an ambulance vehicle, including the use of a banksman and reversing aids.
  • Understanding the use and effects of vehicle safety systems, including Electronic Stability Programme and ABS braking.

Component 2

Emergency response ambulance demonstration driving

This component aims to provide trainee Driving Instructors with the in-depth knowledge, comprehension, and skills necessary to teach, guide, and support learners in the execution of emergency response ambulance demonstration driving. This instruction aligns with the competencies required in High Speed Driver Training.

Component Details

  • Use car control system effectively, including evaluating its stages, understanding its advantages, its interaction with hazards, and applying it in practice.
  • Utilise vehicle’s transmission systems during emergency driving by selecting appropriate gears and driving in a progressive manner
  • Overtake other vehicles during an emergency by understanding the legal requirements and techniques, identifying safe opportunities, and performing overtakes.
  • Drive an ambulance during night-time in both emergency and non-emergency situations, including managing dazzle from lights, recognizing and managing fatigue, and adjusting to visual limitations.
  • Drive in emergency response situations, interpreting high-speed driver training codes, manoeuvring for quick turnaround, managing stress, and reflecting on personal practice.
  • Drive using exemptions for emergency ambulance response, including justifying and evaluating their use, and implementing them in practice.
  • Manage confrontational behaviour when responding to emergencies, including predicting and safely responding to behavioural changes of others.
  • Navigate during emergencies, using directional information, navigational aids, and managing in-vehicle distractions.

Legislation and standards for routine and emergency response ambulance driving

This module aims to arm trainee Driving Instructors with the required knowledge and understanding of driving legislation, regulation, standards and agreed ways of working needed to instruct, coach and support learners in the delivery of routine and emergency response ambulance driving, aligning with the High Speed Driver Training Competencies.

Component 4

Human factors for driver education

The aim of this component is to develop the trainee Driving Instructors knowledge, behaviours and understanding of Human Factors than can influence attitude to risk for a developing emergency response ambulance driver. This will be focusing on 3 main areas, completion of the Ambulance Driver Risk Index [ADRI], developing a working knowledge of the Goals for Driver Education [GDE] framework and completion of the Driving Instructor Ambulance Driver Risk Index to measure progression and development.

The aim of this component is to ensure that you possess the enhanced knowledge, behaviours, understanding and skills required to assess learners in routine and emergency response ambulance driving to a safe and competent level as set out in the High Speed Driver Training Competencies.

Entry Requirements

To uphold the rigorous, valid, and high-quality standards of the FAQ Level 4 Diploma in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving Instruction (RQF), specific entry prerequisites are set for prospective learners. These requirements ensure the suitability of learners to handle the high-risk nature of this qualification and contribute to overall road safety.

  • Candidates must possess a full UK/EU driving licence for the vehicle class they intend to instruct on. Organisations may apply their own rules concerning licences that have been suspended, revoked, or banned, although medical suspensions that have been resolved are generally acceptable.
  • Candidates should have no more than six endorsement points as per the national standard. However, each organisation has the discretion to set stricter standards and/or specify acceptable endorsement categories.
  • Prospective learners are required to hold the FAQ Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving. For legacy instructors, the certificate can be attained via components 1 and 2 of the Level 4 Diploma course.
  • Applicants must also hold, or be actively pursuing, the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, or its equivalent. In addition, they must hold or be registered for and actively working towards the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement or its legacy counterparts (D32/33 or A1). For both certificates, evidence of achievement must be provided before a certification claim is made.
  • Finally, candidates must have completed the Driver Metrix, Ambulance Driver Risk Index Profile (ADRI).
