Course Overview

This five-day, interactive course meets the competencies required by the PHEM (Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine) skills framework at descriptor level D. It equips participants with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to handle various pre-hospital emergency scenarios.

Participants will earn the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (RQF). This certification includes training in the administration of emergency oxygen, management of trauma patients, treatment of major illnesses, and other critical topics.

Course Programme

Component 1

Basic life support and AED & Airway and Ventilation Management

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first responder.
  • Be able to assess an incident.
  • Be able to assess and manage patients with life-threatening and not life-threatening illnesses and injuries.
  • Be able to assess a patient’s airway.
  • Be able to manage an unresponsive patient who is not breathing normally.
  • Be able to safely use an AED during a resuscitation attempt and how to maintain an AED ready for use.
  • Be able to administer emergency oxygen.

Component 2

Assessment and Treatment of Trauma

  • Be able to assess and manage trauma patients.
  • Be able to assess and manage catastrophic bleeding.
  • Be able to assess and manage chest injuries.
  • Be able to assess and manage bleeding.
  • Be able to assess and manage a patient with compromised circulation.
  • Know how to assess and manage wounds and eye injuries.
  • Know how to assess and manage a patient with burns or scalds.
  • Know how to manage a patient with sudden poisoning.
  • Be able to provide emergency care to a patient with head, spinal and musculoskeletal injuries.

Component 3

Assessment & Treatment of Illness – Asthma & Anaphylaxis

  • Know how to identify a patient experiencing breathing difficulties.
  • Know how to manage a patient experiencing breathing difficulties.
  • Know how to manage a patient with anaphylaxis.
  • Know how to assess and manage a patient with a suspected major illness.
  • Know how to manage a patient who is actively convulsing.
  • Understand how to provide emergency care for the effects of environmental exposure.

Entry Requirements

Participants in this course need to be at least 17 years old on the first day of training.

While there are no formal prerequisites, we recommend that learners have a minimum of Level 2 literacy or its equivalent, as well as a foundational knowledge of first aid, to fully benefit from the course content.

Assessment Methods

The course evaluation consists of:

  1. Six practical assessments/skills tests.
  2. Three theory assessments, which are multiple-choice question papers.
  3. One supervised exam.

Certification

Upon successful completion and after their results are submitted, learners will be awarded a digital Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (RQF) e-Certificate. This issuance is contingent upon the training centre’s Direct Claims Status and completion of any necessary requirements.
