First Responder (Racing)

As a First Responder at the UK’s leading horse racing venues, you’ll be responsible for providing basic first aid to patients, either independently or under the guidance of qualified healthcare professionals. Your role includes responding to a variety of medical call-outs at the venue, offering initial first aid and stabilising patients until further assistance from qualified healthcare professionals arrives.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide basic first aid within the scope of practice for a First Responder until qualified medical assistance can attend.
  • Utilise provided manual handling equipment as appropriate.
  • Undertaking a manual handling dynamic risk assessment, where necessary, request additional support before attempting any manoeuvre.
  • Adherence to Medicare policies and procedures.
  • Adherence to any relevant policies and procedures as dictated by any contract held by Medicare.
  • Attending any relevant/required training sessions provided by Medicare.
  • Have an adaptable approach to the role and a willingness to be flexible.
  • Maintaining contractual key performance indicators that are within your control.
  • Identifying and reporting any equipment failures or faults at the point of identification.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Providing safe and effective patient care within the clinical scope of practice for First Responders (First Aid at Work, First Person on Scene qualifications).
  • Recognising when a patient requires more senior clinical intervention and ensuring this assistance is requested in a timely manner.
  • Provide a clinical report once on scene to the relevant Medicare managers.

Documentation and Record Keeping

  • Maintaining a high standard of clinical documentation where required.
  • Ensuring the relevant equipment and/or room and/or response bag check sheets are completed prior to the start of a shift.
  • Submitting accurate and detailed incident forms to Medicare and/or the venue as required.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Ensure the safe storage of all clinical documentation at all times.

Communication

  • Maintaining effective communication with patients, healthcare professionals, Medicare Managers and Associate Medicare Professionals.
  • Ensuring any relevant individual(s) is made aware of any operational or clinical issues when appropriate.
  • Liaise with other staff and communicate patient information in a professional, confidential manner.

Additional Requirements

  • Providing requested information to Medicare under the company’s obligations under the safer recruitment requirements.
  • Providing an enhanced disclosure barring service (DBS) with a barred list information certificate.
  • Providing requested documents and evidence to allow Medicare to undertake an enhanced DBS with a barred list information certificate.
  • On receipt of the Medicare DBS, signing up to the DBS update service to allow Medicare to conduct annual DBS checks. Alternatively, provide a new DBS certificate on an annual basis.
  • Completing the Medicare health assessment prior to the commencement of operational shifts.
  • Maintaining compliance with all required mandatory training set by Medicare.

Qualifications

The following qualifications are essential for a First Responder in our events team:

  • FREC3 or equivalent recognised first aid qualification.
  • A full UK driving licence with no more than 3 penalty points is desirable.

The following skills, knowledge and abilities are essential:

  • Keen interest in working in the health service.
  • Evidence of a satisfactory level of manual handling training.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Self-motivated team player
  • Flexibility to work varying shift patterns as dictated by the service demand of the contracts.
  • Previous experience of working at large scale events is desirable.
