Career Support for Ambulance Professionals: Ambulance Driving

Career Support for Ambulance Professionals

Medicare EMS is committed to supporting the wider emergency and pre-hospital care community, especially those at the beginning of their careers. As part of that commitment, we’re launching a FREE Ambulance High-Speed Driving Introduction Day to help students and early-career clinicians build confidence, gain insight, and take their next step with informed support.

This is a pilot to see how many people in the community would benefit from this kind of support.

About the event:
This event is designed for anyone who’s curious about blue light driving or CERAD Level 3, but wants to explore it first in a relaxed, no-pressure environment. You’ll also have the opportunity to receive free advice and feedback from an experienced high-speed driving instructor, Julie Ryan.

Important note: this is not blue light driving

This is not a blue light driving course. There is no pass or fail, no pressure, and no expectations.
Instead, it’s a practical confidence check and learning experience — giving you a realistic feel for ambulance handling and professional feedback to help you progress.

What you’ll get from the day

Attendees will have the chance to:

  • Get behind the wheel of an ambulance
  • Understand how an ambulance handles at speed (in a controlled, safe setting)
  • Receive honest, constructive feedback from experienced professionals
  • Build confidence and clarity before committing to formal training
  • No blue light driving is involved

If you’ve ever thought, “Am I ready for CERAD Level 3?”  this is a great way to sense-check your readiness and identify what to focus on next.

What can you expect during your session?

Each attendee will take part in a 30-minute ambulance driving session, designed to assess real-world driving ability and build confidence.

During the session, we’ll look at:

Smoothness and vehicle control: How smoothly you handle the vehicle, including steering, braking, acceleration, and overall control.

Driving experience and confidence level: An assessment of your current driving experience, confidence behind the wheel, and suitability for emergency vehicle operations.

Situational awareness and information gathering: How you read the road, anticipate hazards, process information, and maintain awareness of your surroundings while driving.

Helping people take the next step

We know that getting started in the industry can feel daunting — especially when it comes to emergency driving standards and confidence. This tester day is part of Medicare EMS’s ongoing effort to strengthen the pipeline of future professionals, share knowledge, and support entry-level progression with practical opportunities.

We look forward to welcoming you.
