Component 1
Prepare, Drive & Manoeuvre a Range of Patient Care Ambulance Vehicles
The purpose of the component is for learners to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to drive a range of patient care ambulance vehicles safely and commensurate with patient comfort and vehicle empathy
Component Details
Learning Outcome - You will:
- Be able to carry out a pre-shift vehicle daily inspection and pre-driving checks
- Be able to comply with current legislation and driving regulations at all times
- Be able to drive a range of vehicles defensively
- Be able to use vehicles’ braking systems
- Be able to use vehicles’ steering systems
- Be able to safely negotiate bends
- Be able to use vehicles’ transmission systems during ambulance driving
- Be able to vary the speed of the vehicle
- Be able to use procedures for dual carriageways and. motorway driving
- Be able to reverse and manoeuvre an ambulance vehicle safely
- Understand the use and effects of vehicle safety systems
- Be able to overtake other vehicles during ambulance driving
- Understand the effects of adverse conditions on driving
- Be able to manage hostility whilst driving
- Be able to navigate during ambulance driving
- Be able to drive an ambulance vehicle during hours of darkness

Assessment for this qualification is conducted through the compilation of a Portfolio of Evidence. Your progress will be internally assessed and quality assured by our dedicated Center staff. To ensure the highest standards, the qualification is also externally quality assured by FutureQuals External Quality Advisors (EQAs).
Upon successful completion of the FAQ Level 3 Award in Patient Care Services: Ambulance Driving, you will have the opportunity to further your education and career by progressing to the FAQ Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving.
